" I would tell her that if you enjoy working in retail by all means explore the company.
But be keenly aware that if you don’t do well with politics or aren’t surrounding yourself with the right people per se & if perhaps you don’t have it in you to be able to deliver on the sales quota they assign you then you will always just earn hourly and you won’t qualify for commission.
The company has their commission structure and hourly payscale “Just So” that if you work a certain amount of hours and maybe the hours are not during peak times, or you don’t have the clientele that are loyal and come back to you and you alone then there may not be advancement within this company for you."

"You are expected to work your shift at Nordstrom but yet there is favoritism within departments. For example, some employees ask to leave early if it is slow but if others ask, they get written up for not working their scheduled shift.
You may be expected to work 4 hours but because of the distance you may drive to work, an employee may spend an hour & a half each way in traffic to get to work (meaning they drive 3 hours to work 4) but there is no real plan to ask those who perhaps live close by & want the hours work to have a more balanced work life balance."

"It depends on which manager you get.
Like I have indicated before, because Nordstrom doesn’t have a leadership program then their managers aren’t necessarily the leading type.
So their managers may not inspire, help you to grow & Have an interest in you succeeding for yourself or the company.
They may just follow policy.
Remember, most of the managers at Nordstrom have merely been a salesperson and have been with the company awhile so they have climbed the ranks that way and unfortunately there are many managers that aren’t leaders. But if I was a CEO or someone working on the executive team, I’d certainly want my managers at some point to be trained to help alleviate turn over & nurture sales techniques that cultivated sales and earned more revenue. "I’ve been treated well and have supportive managers. There’s also room for advancement. The only con is the low rate of hourly pay. It’s hard to make commission when foot traffic is slow. "
