"If you want to succeed, you unfortunately have to know when to be "submissive". To get the things you want, you have to do so in creative (or, dare I say, cunning) ways. Don't be afraid to have a long game and be willing to make sacrifices short term."

"In my department, I have been able to have a child and stay home with her for over a year with opportunities to work from home (i.e. teaching online). Overall satisfied with the climate here."

"Working for Penn State University as staff can be very different across campus. Penn State really should re-evaluate their policy for parental leave for staff (faculty get unlimited sick time that they can use, staff must use their accrued sick and vacation time). I've heard more and more stories about women deciding to not have a second child or trying to get their doctor to clear them to come back early at six weeks because Penn State does not give staff fully paid parental leave."
