Be prepared to figure your business out on your own. Despite the promise of support. If you get it...great. but don't set yourself up to rely on anyone but yourself. So much for team work.

    I really feel like if you fit into the 'matrix box' then the world is at your feet. They will bend over backwards to make doors open for you. But if you are a regular person who maybe isn't photogenic or doesn't ooze with over excitement 24/7 then you get lost in the crowd of a growing company and no matter who you reach out to or how great you are at your job...accolades and recognition is out of the question.

    You are promised training and mentors but in real life your thrown into your position and...good luck! If your lucky you have great people to work with but office politics and favorites are pretty heavy so it is literally luck of the draw.

    If you don't qualify for FMLA ( I was about 2 months short of qualifying), then they won't even allow a 6 week leave. Meanwhile, Florida law won't let daycares accept a baby younger than 6 weeks. UWF has a written policy allowing up to 6 months parental leave, but does not honor it. All maternity is at supervisor's discretion to approve and HR is disorganized and slow and won't get involved. So you need to be careful about what department you are coming into. I'm salaried and classed as staff, not faculty. Of course, all maternity is unpaid for all employees regardless of classification.

While women are in no way treated as inferiors here, many leadership roles are filled by excellently capable women, the politics and morale of this organization is poor overall. Within the ranks of musicians, the environment tends to be extremely cliquish and unsupportive when the rubber really meets the road. There are good people here, but the big picture climate is relatively inhospitable.
