    It is dependent on your department and supervisor. I have worked in one unit that was not very flexible but in my current role, the management is much more flexible and gives us the resources to balance our work.

    6 months parental leave (gender-blind, so both men and women receive) with the ability to break up the time if you'd like to return after 4 months and then do half weeks for a while etc. or take part of the balance at a later time. There are private nursing rooms and hospital-grade pumps in all offices. Parents returning from leave also receive sessions with a professional career coach to help with the transition. There are also employee groups for parents that meet regularly and share advice etc. (separate groups for mothers and fathers). Health insurance is fully covered (for you and your spouse/family) and includes coverage for adoptive parents, in vitro fertilization and egg freezing.

Very thin representation of women in management. Women making a recommendation that is laughed at then having the same recommendation lauded when proposed by a man is very common. Work life balance is uneven; good in some teams, poor in others.

It's a French school, so it's conscious of certain things--vacations are vacations, for example. On the other hand, the child care leave policy is terrible and what's particularly bad is that if a woman decides to take some unpaid time, she loses her insurance. It's also hard to get clear information about various leave options.

Alsco is a great company but very behind the times in terms of short term disability and maternity leave. They don't have a policy for either. They truly want more women in their male dominated industry, but they don't take the right steps to get women in the door.

It's management male-dominated. Men with less experience and less education were getting promoted, while other highly rated and other respected female photographers were getting "promotions" without promised pay raise (i.e. more work, no official change in job title, no change in salary) and not finding out until the paycheck came at the end of the week. The microaggressions towards women said callously by management got tiring (and the not-so-microaggressions of stupid sexist jokes that one manager in particular wouldn't shut up about.) If you want higher-up management throwing buzzwords at you every meeting without actually fixing any problems, be my guest.

Looking back to my first day, I would advise myself to build stronger relationships with my peers and utilized them more for support throughout my challenges. My advice to other women is to truly understand the scheduling and time commitments needed for this position, especially small children. You will easily put forth 65 hours/week.
