Some of the managers are particularly critical of women on the team I work with, so much so that other men openly comment on it. Upper management is aware of this but does nothing.

The flexibility for women at Vanguard seems to depend on one's direct supervisor and the position held. Overall Vanguard is a nice place to work. Make sure to negotiate a strong salary for entry, as promotions are minimal once within the organization.

Be clear about where you are in your life stage and what office you'll be working for in choosing whether this is a good fit. Each office within the Department has a different culture; some grind hard and expect non-stop hours, others are more balanced. Some are staffed mostly by political appointees and (young) staffers who approach work as a sprint, others have more career staff who take a marathon/long-term approach.

Law firm life is challenging and this place leaves you to figure out the work balance on your own. If 5 partners insist they need to have you work on their matter in what is already your busiest work, there isn't anyone with power who can tell 2 or 3 of those people to find someone else. + Lean teams = you can easily get run ragged from week to week.
