It is a great company to work for. I feel supported as an associate, and as a woman.

Be very clear about your time boundaries from the getgo. They take advantage of temp workers, you do the same work as a fulltime employee but received no benefits.

There is no maternity leave, just the regular temp disability where you get $130 per week as required by law.

April 2016
I observed and experienced a lot of gender bias. But most of all, the company is going through some tough times after growing too fast, increased competition, and acquisition by of parent company EMC by Dell. There have been multiple restructuring and layoffs, with high percentage of women over 45 impacted. If you are the breadwinner or your salary is essential to your household, VMW would be a risky choice.

November 2015
Because I had been employed by this company for under a year, I was laid off when I took maternity leave. They wouldn't even discuss unpaid leave. They "assured" me I could re-apply, but only after I had been cleared to return to work. Meanwhile, they filled my job before I could return. In truth, I was dreading on the thought of having to return due to the treatment I received. Luckily I locked down a new (better) job within the same week I was to return.

July 2015
There is a fair amount of flexibility that allows for work/life balance. While the benefits are good, the salaries are very low compared to for-profit firms. There is very little thought given to career progression and planning; also very limited mentoring. Another big negative is the amount of bureaucracy involved getting anything done.

It was very enriching. I sometimes felt as if I was being judged for being a mother, because I couldn't work the long hours other people worked.
