There has to be something said about how amazing it is to work in the Auto Industry for a company who has an amazing Female CEO and Board of Directors that is 50% women! Mary Barra is truly an inspiration to work for, though she is not the only inspiring woman at this company. GM is making great strides at balancing the scales and getting more women into positions of leadership. This isn't just about promoting women for the sake of promoting women either.... it is about highlighting the amazing work women are doing and giving credit where credit is due.

    While this can vary by department and manager, each manager I have seen and the majority I have encountered truly values work-life balance and understands that life is a part of work. We have families and commitments outside of the workplace. I often seen managers allow flexible schedules to allow for dropping off or picking up their children.

FRBNY could be more progressive to promote women's well-being in the work place. One of the biggest problem is the lack of enforcement and clarity on company policy. For example, each women seem to cut their own deal on maternity leave and it does not seem fair. More transparency would help to project fairness.

This company provides the minimum state-required paid sick leave (3 days). Maternity leave is limited to California state mandated leave (12 weeks unpaid FMLA, 6 weeks temporary disability at ~55% pay). There are good medical insurance options, but only one (the most expensive) includes infertility treatment at a $2000 lifetime cap. Apart from benefits, this is a good company to work for with competitive, negotiable salaries and good opportunities for professional development and advancement. However, for a company that is run by women and whose employees are 99% women, they are clearly not committed to supporting families and are better suited as a stepping stone for women early in their careers, or women returning to the workforce late in their careers.

As an intern I can't speak for how this company treats its female employees long term but at the two locations I have worked at so far, they are very fair to all employees and don't shy from having women in technical and leadership roles.
