The work environment is competitive, and there is great disparity between the senior directors and the rest of the staff. The ongoing assessments are stressful and unnecessary. Very little room to grow or move up.

American Express is a wonderful company for women. Although top leadership tends to be primarily men, there are women across the company is leadership positions. It is also very supportive of women (and men!) in terms of a newly expanded parental leave program as well as on site back up daycare.

    Speaking from my personal experience as a working mother with two young children, I am able to work full time during a compressed work week and I regularly take advantage of the incredible on site day care program.

    The company culture is one that consistently devalues women. The CEO, James Neilsen, specifically, shows such disrespect for women and demands they humble themselves to him. He shows no trust in even the most senior, professional women. His disrespect of the women in the company is a terrible example to the rest of the men who emulate his lead.

American Express as a whole prides itself on being as diverse and balanced as possible and offering as much flexibility as possible. However the actual practice of these values varies by department. My manager is awesome and allows me as much flexibility as possible but that is not consistent across my entire department, which causes significant strife. The company's benefits are very generous - especially the new 5 month paid maternity leave policy in the U.S.

    American Express implemented 20 weeks of paid maternity leave in 2016. When I had my baby they offered 12 weeks paid leave - I used 4 weeks of accrued vacation time with no issues.
