Don't expect to have equal opportunity for advancement since the only female in the C-suite is an HR exec and she has no influence.

Single male owner likes to hear himself talk. All ideas must go through him. There's a very lengthy chain of command to get any approvals. Once you get an approval someone inj management changes it and you have to start over. Very time wasting environment.

Give more opportunity for growth in employee roles. Let employees challenge themselves and think outside the box. Let go of the tight reigns and let employees succeed. Don't hold them back.

Always keep sight of the bigger business picture. This is the only way to align yourself with the right people and accounts, and maintain your value and visibility.

  • Recommend to Women?

Maybe. While O&M has recently improved its leave policy, in reality it is very hard to juggle a working mom life as a Creative. Creative hours are notoriously long and unpredictable. Most women in the department don't have kids. Those that do are placed on the mommy track, work-wise. There are very few mommys in company-shaping, senior-level positions (and they all have nannies). So, while the leave is good in theory, you have to fight to keep hopes of any career growth.

The work environment offers a significant opportunity to learn and has strong female mentors, which is one of the reasons I chose to work here in the first place. While nowhere is perfect, it has overall been a rewarding experience.

February 2016

Plenty of women in middle management, but not upper management. This is an employee-owned company, which means any spending on benefits comes out of the company's stock price. HDR seems slow to change but not outright unfair to women.
