"Experiences vary widely among departments/units. Ask around to understand dynamics of the team you're considering working with. In the Management & Professional bargaining unit (AAPS), there are lots of resources for professional development (workshops, funding, etc), but opportunities for advancement within the organization were limited in my experience. "
