"Working in this lab specifically is extremely toxic and manipulative. Admittedly, because this PI does tend to hire more women, you are surrounded more by women in science which is a fantastic environment to work in day-to-day (if you are a woman). The biggest issue is that the management of this lab and the PI are extremely manipulative and toxic (going so far as to emotionally blackmail you if he thinks you are not producing POSITIVE results -- negative results/attempts to get the data are completely ignored). He as, on multiple occasions, pressured us by informing us our rate of getting things done will directly result in a kid dying because we couldn't get them the gene therapy in time. He has even said that "once I have a bad opinion of you (i.e. if he thinks you are lazy/don't have good results etc), my opinion of you will never change" and you will become the scapegoat of the lab. If something goes wrong, its your fault. "

"In this lab specifically, we are often required to work late/work weekends when the project requires it. Technically, we are supposed to receive "comp" time, so however many hours you work over, you get off the next week. We are not paid overtime. The comp time system did work initially for me personally, because I was very clear and direct about how many hours I worked and that was why I was not in lab. However my coworker was not as clear, and she was "asked to leave" (essentially fired but he couldn't fire her legally), because she was using her comp time and wasn't as clear or direct about it."

"I've worked here for 4 years and there are a lot of women working here, both in higher positions and in support roles. As seems to be standard for healthcare and biomedical research, there are more women than men. However, although 12 weeks of maternity leave are provided, none are paid by the university - you have the option to pay for your salary with accrued sick/vacation time. I also feel that most people are pressured not to take the full time available, even if they were able to do so financially. As in most scientific venues, women often feel pressured to match or exceed the dedication level of men in their field to "prove" that they're worth something."
