"I think if you're hired in a position that you want and you have a great team, then you're in the right place. For me, where I am, compensation is severely lacking, our systems are outdated and we're barely starting to get support to implement much needed changes. Get the experience and get out. "

"The research community at the U is very inclusive in my experience and strives to hire exceptional scientists. Many of the older tenured faculty are white men but I believe that's just a result of science itself being primarily men for so long. The trends towards equality are definitely seen in the younger faculty and graduate students. I left due to my own struggles balancing PhD candidacy and my mental health, but my mentor and program were all very helpful as I transitioned out of academia. I can't say that this will be the same for every person you encounter, but every faculty member I approached upon leaving was completely understanding and supportive of my need to focus on my health first."
