"Although there is a wide pay range for each position, they will usually put you in the bottom half of the range for your salary. The salaries are decided by corporate HR and they don't negotiate much, if at all."

"Like most major companies, you are doing the work of 3 people. Negotiate up front your requirements for flexibility and work life balance and get it in writing. "

"You are allowed to take up to 16 weeks off but only 2 are fully paid (6 are FMLA). VUMC also pays monthly so many times when women would come back from maternity leave they already missed the pay cycle-- which means three months without a paycheck. "

"If you don't ask, you don't get. Negotiate your pay and fight for fair compensation, especially at your initial hiring. Promotions are hard work on the part of your one-up leader, so make a good case for yourself and present it, including goals to achieve the next level. Persist politely, bringing up your case for your promotion until it happens. "
