Moms Trying to Find & Pursue Their Purpose

Are you becoming more future-driven?

I'm curious -- for awhile all the talk was on surviving COVID-19. Recently, Pinterest released a report showing more users are going into future mode...meaning they are starting to plan more...vacations, events, etc. I'm curious if more working moms are exciting survival mode and moving more into, what do I really want moving forward type thinking. Where do you fall on this spectrum?

There has been evidence a my work that the business is not doing well since this whole pandemic started affecting us all. I mutually agreed with my boss to have my hours cut, (one) because we don't have enough work (or money coming in) to keep everyone employed full-time like usual, and (two) I did not want to be one of the reasons that the business is failing. I have a good position, have not pursued another job, and been with the company for over a decade, so I have been settled in... and comfortable, until now. Fortunately I have some savings that I haven't needed to touch, and we can survive on the hours I am working, for now. But if this business continues to go downhill, I might not have a choice but to start looking for work when I really don't want to make a career change. Making change in the future has been in the back of my mind as it's not entirely impossible, hence, I am here updating my profile with more details just in case I need to start pursuing a new job. Also, my firstborn is grown and has moved out, I have had my first wave of empty nest syndrome. He no longer needs me or wants me to provide for him. My 2nd and youngest has only 4 short years before he's an adult. We'll see how much longer he'll need me as well. So yes, my financial requirements change with time.

For some reason this didn't pop up in my alerts so I'm just now seeing it. How are you doing? What's the latest with work and have you been creating a plan to go in a different direction?

Thank you for checking back. I just saw your response right now too as I haven't checked in for a few weeks. I'm doing alright! I think I am doing better personally with less hours (for now) as I'm getting more rest and have time to do things at home. Work hours are still cut, and no new news. The business is still running, currently, with what little work we do get from our customers. One thing I still need to is continue updating my profiles on all the job websites, just in case. In my spare time, I have taken steps to possibly work on some things I might be able to do in the future, i.e. a writing project. I have also been listening to some podcasts and audio-books to get some inspiration. I have also looked into some online courses to further my education. Haven't gotten far yet with these, but it's my goal to complete a few modules per week. A little bit at a time.

Honestly, it sounds like you're doing all the right things. So glad to hear you're taking care of yourself personally (that often goes out the window for working moms). Maybe this whole thing is actually a blessing for you and will afford you more opportunity to figure out some other paths that might be of interest (like the writing project). Please keep us posted.
