Took a Break & Trying to Get Back In
Greetings! I took a big break from work to switch professional gears--it was a rather huge switch, really--four years and two new degrees later. I don't mind starting on the ground floor of a new role because then I'll learn the in's and out's of an organization, its culture, and people. I sometimes wonder if maybe it's better to leave out some of my previous education and senior leadership, though? There are so many jobs, and yet, I'm struggling to find a fit. I see roles I know I can do, but because I've been out of the work force, I don't apply. Then, when I do find roles, I worry I'm not up-to-date, and if I'm thinking that, then hiring officials are too. Will they think I'm less trainable, or [name it] because of my age and background? I suppose it comes down to networking. What are your thoughts? I look forward to your feedback. :-)
I wrote previously "Awesome--thank you," but I think I need to be more specific. I like the idea of listing all of my past experience on my LinkedIn page but limiting my experience on my resume. That way, a hiring official isn't overwhelmed. I'm qualified, but not too proud to begin fresh, which is why I chose to do what I did! :-) Also, I really like the angle of networking with someone who has themselves pivoted. I didn't think about that before, and now I will. So, "Awesome--thank you!" :-)
Thank you for this! I especially think your reply will be helpful for others in the group who may be considering doing something similar!
You are definitely asking the right questions! Without knowing all the details, I would guess that it would work well to include everything from your past on your Linkedin Profile and cut your resume down to what is most applicable. I recommend "testing" out different strategies with different resumes on applications and see if one type of resume gets more traction. You are stuck between possibly being under or overqualified. You are right about networking - because ultimately you are looking for someone is going to take you as you are, and often that is someone who may have made this type of pivot themselves or sees some of themselves in you.
