Hey everyone, i joined this desperate for advice.
i have spent a long time trying to get a marketing or business analyst position and have fallen short more times than i can count. It has been discouraging to say the least.. i feel skilled and ready to enter the workforce but i dont know how to translate my skills when i dont have the professional experience to back them up.
Do you have samples you can provide during interviews? Julie Perrine just released a book about creating a professional portfolio & has lots of tips on her website allthingsadmin.com
Non-profits need volunteers for this kind of thing, so that can build your portfolio.
Also, you can do some gigwork from online sources such as Upwork.
And if you can, solicit feedback from interviewers. If successful candidates have some specific qualification other than years of experience, you may be able to obtain it through a training or certification program.
Try temp work or entry-level positions to get your foot in the door, then network like crazy.
If there are positions in your area try a temp to perm or contract marketing position. That could open up into a full-time role or opportunity working with the company.
In addition, there are volunteer opportunities to lend your experience in Marketing. That adds hands-on experience to your resume and might lead to making a connection or open doors to a paid opportunity.
You might try working with a resume writer. They will be able to help you figure out what parts of projects and things that you've done are important and should be highlighted.
If you are coming out of school, do not discount the experience school projects give you. If you are trying to get into marketing, depending on what side of it you are trying to be in, you should consider having examples of your work ready to share.
Good luck! :)
Business analyst and marketing are not necessarily directly one in the same. For ex, for insurance companies they have business analyst entry level positions but they expect you to have a programming background like in sql, Java, c++, etc. so pay attention to the duties and requirements. Feeling like you are qualified vs having the basic minimum qualifications are totally different. If you think you manage projects well and have skills and former experience to back it up, try expanding your application pool to project mgt or program mgt. and even with those jobs you can get certified to better your odds of getting hired
What's you background?
What makes you qualified for those roles?
You say "have fallen short more times than i can count" - what, specifically, does that mean? Getting interviews but not advancing to next round? Not getting interviews?
What have you done so far in your job search?
