Is it okay to ask an HR manager why you weren't chosen for a position?
I applied for a Jr. Accountant position with a non-profit agency that I felt strongly about. They contacted me right away and setup a zoom interview with the hr manager and the CFO. I felt like the interview went well and they kept mentioning how much experience I had. I was told I would hear from them in a week. I didn't, so I reached out. Of course I received the "it was a hard decision, but we have chosen someone else." I would just like to know what I should do differently next time. Is it acceptable to reach out to her? Thank you
a previous employer always made sure to talk to internal candidates prior to the announcement so they knew they weren't chosen, along with some of the reasoning for it, so I don't see why asking HR would be a problem? Might depend on the company culture, too?
Hi Dorice, a good trick for getting feedback is to ask during the interview. At the end of every interview, ask "Do you have an y reservations about me as a candidate?" For legal reasons, most hiring professionals will not answer this question after they have made a decision. And honestly, what they do say after the fact, is usually not the whole picture and can be confusing. If you ask during the interview, you will get the most sincere feedback!
I think it's always great to ask the question. It helps you improve your interview skills. Also, I've had companies reach back out to discuss other opportunities.
I always ask! Think of it this way, what's the worst that could happen? They say no, they can't share that with you. Absolutely nothing lost.
Definitely okay to ask - that's a great idea!
My suggestion is to definitely ask but don't expect anything in response. Meanwhile, what's in store for YOU is still yours so keep your options open.
I think it's perfectly acceptable to ask why you didn't get the job. It's nice to know what we need to work on to get towards our goals.
