Standing out
Hi,
Thank you for the webinar. Do you have any suggestions on how to stand out when you’re up against 100’s of other candidates? The job boards show how many applicants there are which can be intimidating & the employers email reply usually says “we’ve had an overwhelming response” in one way or another.
Also, if you know it’s a job you can do with your eyes closed and you have the transferable skills, but your experience is not exactly what they want to see, how do you convince the employer of this and get past the ATS before it weeds you out?
I’m looking for a position with a mission-driven company where I can feel good about what I do (for major hours of my life) in a remote setting. I don’t think it’s too much to ask, but outside financial pressures seem to prove otherwise.
Many thanks for your time and advice!
Kimberly
Thanks for joining the group and attending the webinar! Like Beth mentions, there isn't really a way to convince the hiring manager of how qualified you are simply from your application. If you get all the keywords that the ATS system is looking for right, you still only have about a 1 in 10 chance of getting a response. I would recommend finding out about opportunities by leveraging your current network. Arrange to have conversations with people that are invested in your success like we talked about in the webinar. Ask them for advice and if they don't offer, ask them if there is someone else that they can introduce you to. Often where this hits a dead end is that your friends and family think that they have to introduce you to a hiring manager. If they can introduce you to someone who is employed and lives in your area, the next person will do their best to try to get you one step closer to the type of opportunity you are looking for.
Thanks for joining the webinar. A few thoughts - job boards are really difficult to find a job. The best way is through direct networking. Identify 10 people on LinkedIn who have a job that you want and reach out to connect and then follow up to speak with them. You want to learn how they got there and if they can refer you to the hiring manager directly. Also, when you go to an interview or informational meeting, think about how you can help that person or company to be successful. ie - can you help them generate revenue or leads, or write x number more reports. The more you can quantify your results, the more you will stand out from others.
