Transfer request guidance
Hello everyone, I recently put in an internal, lateral transfer request due to a negative work environment that is affecting my physical and mental health (I have been with the company and in this position two years). I report to two managers (one for the kind of work I do and one in the office I work in). My content manager approves and has been working with me on this, and my team manager has also reluctantly approved, but under the condition that I have a 9 month transfer period where I work for and report to the new team but still do all of my work for the original team, just on a compressed timeline that suits them. When I first heard his condition, my heart stopped. I had thought I could avoid giving workplace/interpersonal reasons for my transfer by highlighting career-related reasons I want to change, but now I don't know what to do. Is this something to bring up with HR? I am so unhappy in this work environment that contemplating another 9 months feels impossible. I feel like I have already set my career way back at this point by asking for a request, but it isn't worth my health and sanity to tough it out any longer. Any advice is appreciated.
I would absolutely discuss with HR and ask if a 9 month transition is standard. It feels like the manager doesn't want to be bothered to work through the change, however it may be a 2-3 month transition then 6 months of "available for assistance." Be sure to approach this in an information seeking/ solution seeking manner. You may be able to leave it as 9 months on paper and in practicality get it to be a much shorter timeframe of actual double work.
Thank you, Gillianne. That was my thinking. Your solution is what I had been expecting, so I will see what HR says.
