The position is for part-time position - 24 hours a week - with the potential for future full-time work running a prototyping shop requiring a wide range of experience and skills. The individual needs be able to work independently in all aspects of this operation to ensure the design, and availability of tools, fixtures, and gages are available for program support. As part of our team, you will be developing initial prototype technologies and transitioning these technologies to operational use. The ideal candidate is a problem-solver who can work independently to develop prototypes from drawings or concepts.
This position is an on-site position in Cambridge, MA supporting activities for commercial and DoD customers.
What You Will Do
Machinist will be involved in all phases of projects from design, tooling quotes to installation and commissioning of the tools.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, understand the principles of machining, and be proficient in using various tools and machinery.
Use precision tools, machinery, and equipment such as lathe, vertical milling machine, drill press, hydraulic press, chop saw, band saw, push and pull broaches and a variety of cutting tools and equipment.
Design and develop new prototypes for production.
Produce and assemble prototype parts, components, and assemblies.
Determine machining methods and processes for producing new designs.
Run tests and inspections on all prototype parts and assemblies to ensure quality standards are met.
Work with engineers and other technical staff to develop, troubleshoot, and modify prototypes.
Key emphasis will be on the appropriate involvement and ownership with stakeholders and ensuring that tools delivered meet both the technical expectation and process requirements.
Select and use the appropriate tools, fixtures, and materials for the prototype projects.
Excellent problem-solving skills to troubleshoot any issues that may arise during the process.
Analyze blueprints and CAD models to plan the machining process.
Calculate dimensions, tolerances, and other machining requirements based on design specifications.
Monitor machine operations, adjust settings, and make necessary repairs to ensure optimal performance.
Follow safety guidelines when operating machinery and using tools.
Qualifications You Must Have
Associate's degree or other 2-year post high school training with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in prototyping materials, machinery & tooling design environment or BS with 5+ or more years of relevant experience in a machinery & tooling design environment
Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
Experience in manufacturing assembly process design & qualification; experience in bonding, and coating applications
Knowledge of the properties of metal and other materials.
Ability to read blueprints, sketches, and CAD/CAM files.
Ability to use precision tools (e.g., calipers) to take accurate measurements.
Knowledge of safety precautions related to occupational hazards, procedures, and practices of the trade.
Position requires US citizenship with ability and willingness to obtain a US Government Security Clearance

Fundamental understanding of composite component fabrication and materials
Ability to guide non-mechanical/technical scientists/engineers through design and material selection to accomplish their prototype goal/idea, including translating hand sketches into physical hardware
Familiar with all other supporting machine shop tools including bandsaws, table saw, drill press, grinders, pneumatic tools, routers, 3d printing (a plus), tool sharpeners, QC table and measuring tools including micrometers, dial indicators, vernier calipers, & feeler gauges
Possess quality focus, sound judgment and decision-making skills
Flexible and agile with the ability to pivot quickly to changing circumstances and business demands
Team player and highly motivated to make a difference
Maintain a clean and safe working environment at all times

The salary range for this role is 48,000 USD - 116,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
