    A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

    • Conduct comprehensive system studies and delineate protection requirements for design, meticulously reviewing and approving one-line diagrams, elementary/schematics, and logic diagrams about Generator and Transmission relays.

    • Foster collaborative relationships with diverse engineering disciplines-including Plant engineers, substation engineers, distribution field engineers, project engineers, and apparatus engineers-to bolster generation expansion, automation, and infrastructure replacement initiatives.

    • Methodically capture and assess data from various sources, including Power plants, transmission lines, sub-transmission and distribution systems, generators, and transformer tests, leveraging appropriate software tools (e.g., CAPE, CYME) to model systems for short circuit and coordination studies.

    • Craft relay settings and execute additional tasks to ensure compliance with Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) and North American Electric Reliability Corporation Protection and Control (NERC PRC) regulations.

    • Dispatch settings for generation and substation relays (e.g. GE, SEL, and Electromechanical) via the ASPEN relay database to field personnel, offering support to Test technicians during in-servicing or commissioning of relay settings, and reviewing/approving returned as-left relay setting files, collaborating closely with Test technicians to amend relay settings as vital.

    • Analyze fault-related events by scrutinizing historical data such as Digital Fault Recorder (DFR) traces, digital relay records, or related datasets.

    • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Major Projects, furnishing engineering direction to external design and setting contractors.

    • Formulate recommendations and resolutions for Operations, contributing to mitigation efforts.

    • Occasionally undertake field visits for project job walks, commissioning, or testing requirements.

    The essentials

    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.

    • Five or more years of electrical engineering experience.

    • Two or more years of dedicated Relay engineering experience.

    The preferred

    • One or more years of Engineering experience within the Electric Utility industry, focusing on Generation, Transmission and Distribution, or Substations.

    • Proficiency in Computer Aided Protection Engineering (CAPE), CYME, ASPEN relay database.

    • Proven proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio, and Project).

    • Expertise in interpreting engineering standards and applying system protection knowledge to design electrical one-line diagrams, elementary/schematics, and protection logic diagrams.

    • Proficient in conducting system studies, symmetrical component analysis, fault calculation, and configuring Electromechanical Relays, as well as SEL and GE microprocessor relays, utilizing Accelerator and URPC software.

    • Familiarity with ERP/CMMS solutions, such as SAP.

    • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

    • Capable of growing both independently and within a team environment.

    You should know

    • This position's work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

    • Position will require up to 25% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.

    • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
