Led by a female CEO at headquarters near Philadelphia, American Water employs 6,900 dedicated professionals who provide drinking water, wastewater and related services to households and businesses in 46 U.S. states and Ontario, Canada, as well as a dozen military bases. Founded in 1886, four women and four men comprise the company board of directors.

Safety, trust, environmental leadership, teamwork and high performance define our values — a culture where every employee contributes and lives up to her potential. We base our success on our employees enjoying a vested interest in the business. As a part of our team, you will help make a great company even better — in doing so, American Water will reward your endeavors.

In an April 2018 Business Journal article, CEO Susan Story explained how and why companies select female chief executives:

“We all came from the ground up, we worked in power plants, worked in operations,” she said, stressing the power of a STEM degree. “If you have the credentials, the education and you work in the field like everybody else, it becomes less of an issue if you’re female or a minority. You go through the same steps everyone else does.”
