    Senior software engineer Carissa loves the challenge of working in the financial markets, though her path to DRW wasn’t exactly a straight one. A former high school math teacher, she went back to school to earn a master’s degree in computer science before exploring her interest in the trading industry, an interest that became a passion thanks to the smart, passionate people around her.

    “There’s a lot of mobility among teams here, with constant opportunities to learn something new. And because we’re free to choose the technology stack that best solves each problem, the learning happens project to project. I started programming in C#, but changing teams exposed me to a new suite of languages that I’m now working in regularly.

    A typical day for me might start with a team meeting to go through priorities, followed by a pair programming session with a colleague. Pairing really hones your skills – clearly explaining your approach to someone else and listening to their direct feedback is how you get better. I might take a break with some lunchtime yoga before settling in to code independently during the afternoon.”

    Meghan works on one of the quantitative trading desks at DRW. After five years, she credits her success to her ability to pick up the technical aspects of quantitative finance and her natural curiosity. 

    “When I decided to join DRW, it was because of the people. Today, it’s still the people that keep me captivated by my work. The team I’m part of has expanded since my first day – we have a solid group with diverse strengths, personalities and interests. But we all hold the same core values of respect and integrity. I see this in action every day during our stand-up meetings. We’re always engaged in open dialogue – our discussion is never focused on just one person or one idea.
    One of the things I like best is the impact I can have on my small team. It helps me focus my long- and short-term goals. There’s no singular achievement that I'll reach. The field of quantitative finance is increasingly technical, both mathematically and philosophically. There’s always a new horizon.”

    Kimberly is the director of DRW VC, the arm of DRW that invests in financial and enterprise technology. Colleagues around the world support her team in surfacing ventures, reviewing new products and sharing industry expertise with portfolio companies.
