Providing continued learning opportunities for our employees
On the associate level, this means giving people the opportunity to earn debt-free degrees in business or supply chain management through our Live Better U program for just $1 day — we cover the rest. Associates can also receive college credit for paid training at Walmart Academies. As of 2019, we’ve helped make over $317 million in college credits possible.
Supporting families in all their forms
We know that families take many forms, and we support our professionals however they choose to grow theirs. That’s why we expanded our paid parental leave benefits in 2019 to allow for up to 10 weeks of protected paid maternity leave and up to six weeks of protected paid parental leave for non-birth parents of any gender, including those who are welcoming a new child through adoption or foster care. We also expanded our adoption assistance benefit to cover up to $5,000 of related expenses.
Celebrating uniqueness, including in career paths
We believe in celebrating the uniqueness of perspective each of us brings to the table, and that includes career paths. For those of us who arrive at Walmart via less-traditional paths, we know that the experience you’re able to offer is special. That’s why our Military Spouse Career Connection program, for instance, has helped us hire nearly 6,000 military spouses since launching on Veterans Day in 2018, and it’s also why our “returnship” program, Path Forward, helps caregivers who’ve paused their careers to reenter the workforce. Giving back to our communities
At Walmart, we’re known for our passion in giving back on both a broad and a personal scale. Together, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation generally provide more than $1 billion annually in cash and in-kind donations to support programs that align with our philanthropic priorities. On average, each of our stores gives more than $100K in cash to the community it’s a part of, and we’ve provided more than $42 million in local grants, too. Much of our community-based work has to do with protecting the environments we operate within, including by combating climate change through Project Gigaton by reducing one billion metric tons of greenhouse gases by 2030; building 36 community solar gardens in Minnesota; working with U.S. private brand suppliers to achieve 100% recyclable, reusable or industrially compostable packaging by 2025; installing over 120 electric vehicle charging stations at Walmart stores nationwide; and conserving more than 1.4 million acres across the U.S. since 2005 through our Acres for America program.
Offering help to those who need it most
Beyond bringing a positive impact to the individual communities and environments we operate in, we’re also dedicated to sharing the resources we have access to with those who are most in need. Our “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” campaign is in its sixth year, and through it, we’ve helped donate over 1 billion meals to those at risk of going hungry. When natural disasters strike, Walmart is here to help. In the past two years alone, we’ve given nearly $50 million in cash, water, and food to victims of hurricanes, wildfires, and tornadoes, as well as raised an additional $44 million in hurricane relief. We also support our associates in mobilizing, which means we’ve been able to provide disaster relief in situations ranging from floods in Peru to California’s wildfires.
