I would focus on networking like crazy and establishing credibility and a name for yourself before going on maternity leave, only because after children it gets much more difficult to attend networking events, and having a strong network and solid reputation is critical to be successful at the firm.

It'll bleed you dry working but you will learn more than you will anywhere else. Some teams have great bennies, flex schedule, good benefits. Tough to get promoted without subjective proposal work.

Maybe. Depends where in firm. Some areas more male-centric, good old boys mentality.

I've been here about 4 years, and compared to other companies in the government consulting market, I think BAH is the best. Benefits are solid, even though they are slowly eroding. Which is happening everywhere, by the way. People are generally happy, which includes the bosses, so it makes the atmosphere good. My coworkers and team members are very motivated, have initiative, and are eager to learn. It's a collaborative workplace, so if you are a loner, you might not like it. If you can admit that you don't now everything and need help sometimes, then you'll do well.

It's primarily an "Old Boys Club." Most employees are not located in the Washington DC area, yet all the benefit extras are focused on that area.
