"I can only speak from the perspective of a graduate student, but I think the UMN is a pretty good place to work. Some faculty and students work long hours, but not all. It's not something that's discussed too much. Every department has a different culture, I'm in Plant and Microbial Biology and it feels laid back. Compensation is alright, it's around living wage for the area, but expect lots of TA-ing unless you can get a fellowship. The people in this department are friendly."

"A lot of this will vary depending on your classification as well. I am in the P&A (professional & administrative) group, which gets a lot of the same benefits/rights as faculty."

"Because the university is such a large institution, there can be some rigid policies that do not allow for adjustments for particular jobs. All-in-all, it likely depends on who your direct manager is."

"I am in the Professional & Administrative job classification - this varies depending on your classification. The maternity leave is a bit funny to navigate, especially if your HR person isn't very familiar with it. But! You are able to take a total of 18 weeks. There are 6 weeks of paid parental leave, and either 6 or 8 weeks of paid medical leave depending on how you gave birth. The paid parental leave doesn't have to be taken until 13 weeks after birth, so a leave could look like this:
Weeks 1-6: paid medical leave (accruing vacation hours)
Weeks 7-12: unpaid FMLA (could use up some vacation to make some of it paid leave)
Weeks 13-18: paid parental leave (accruing vacation hours)"

"It's academia, meaning change is slow. Senior leadership is generally male, but junior leadership is more balanced. Childcare is a university-wide issue that needs greater recognition and supportive policy."

"I get 6 weeks paid and then I took 1 week off using my vacation time. I believe if you go through the health care here then you get up to 3 months off. But you will have to use short term or long term disability to get the 3 months off. Not too sure, since I only did my 6 weeks paid with them. I had health through my husbands work place. "

"This is a great place to work if you're not single-income dependent and planning to have children, or if you can get hired into P&A level jobs or above. It is really not so great for Civil Service, with only 2 weeks maternity leave, having to use all your PTO and Sick leave before you qualify for Short Term Disability, so by the time you return to work you have zero hours of time off if the baby is sick and you have to pick them up from daycare. They do offer equal paternity leave, which is nice."
