My newest mentee reached out to me on LinkedIn to ask about the doctoral program I'm in. I've never met her before and we don't have any mutual connections other than headhunters. Even so, she took a chance and started the conversation.
After some back and forth via messaging, I could tell that she was looking for advice beyond selection of a doctoral program.
I let her know that I volunteer as a mentor. I asked her if she would like to Zoom so that we could discuss her goals, get to know each other a bit and see if there was a good connection. And that if things went well via Zoom, we could move forward with a more structured mentoring arrangement.
A connection was made because she was brave enough to reach out. Our Zoom went amazingly well and I'm delighted to have the honor and privilege of mentoring her.
If you are willing to mentor others, let them know. If you are looking for a mentor, never be afraid to ask.
