What to do when your job is in danger?

So I am currently working as a COVID screener at a hospital along with others who were either laid off from their positions or on light duty like me. However I recently saw that human resources is hiring full time entry screeners and have been doing interviews. Now I along with the other women I work with are wondering what will happen to us? I know some are looking for a different job but I am between a rock and a hard place as I am due to get carpal tunnel surgery on my hand at the beginning of August so I hate to apply elsewhere and have to take a week off for my hand to heal. Any advice on how to handle something like this?

Talk to your manager. Do they know your ultimate goal? Make sure management knows that you would like to continue in this position. They may tell you to apply or they may have other suggestions. Be positive and have a frank discussion about your intentions for the future and their plans.

Yes, I’ll echo what the other experts have said above: apply, since you are already an internal candidate, let them know your estimates start date. Also, ensure that in your resume you really highlight that you have worked in their facility within the same capacity and highlight in quantifiable form (using numbers) the following: - how many people you screened per day and in what amount of time? - Did you get a chance to provide your input into screening questions? Or amended a process to make lineups go by faster? - How did you deal with people who were difficult or belligerent? - Any unexpected situations you handled by yourself or with your team?

I would suggest just directly asking! Talk to your manager or whoever oversees the role and ask for more information. It could very well be the case that they just need more screeners, not necessarily that they want to replace you.
