My former boss and I were having communications problems. He was new and his only "communication" to me was about how I had been doing the job wrong across the board, needed a thicker skin, etc. It was so bad that during a heated 1:1 phone conversation, he put the call on speakerphone without telling me and invited other colleagues in to listen to our argument. Total ridicule.
HR decided we needed what seemed like couples counseling, with an assigned HR person as a mediator. These were telephone sessions. It was horribly uncomfortable and did not help. Even the HR person felt so awkward.
I chose to make a lateral move internally, and unknowingly ended up under an even worse megalomanic. The 2 managers had pre-planned the whole thing. Neither of them respected their teams and both wanted to be the new sheriff in town. They colluded to make me look inept (even made up rumors about me) and eventually pushed me out. I adored that company, but these 2 jerks only stayed a few years and they left a burning mess behind. Meantime, MY career has never recovered and I believe I would still be there (and be quite wealthy based on the stock that would have vested by now). It is still painful for me.

Mediation as in legal mediation with uninterested 3rd party or with HR or a panel from your company?

A mediator is a neutral third party between disputing parties. To ensure objectivity, the mediator usually is not an employee of the organization. Their role is to facilitate communication, encourage understanding, and help both sides identify a mutually viable solution to the disputed issues. The mediator does not make decisions or impose solutions but guides the process, encouraging open dialogue and exploring possible outcomes. Their aim is to create a safe and confidential environment where each party can express their views and assist in reaching a mutually acceptable agreement.
I hope someone who has been through mediation and reached a mutual understanding can share their experience. Also, did it help improve the working relationship?
