Hi,
I have been working since 2001. I have experience in banking and insurance for nearly 10 years and for the past 7 years I worked as a casual childcare assistant . I started a accounting and bookkeeping course and will be finishing my studies this April. I would like to know, if there is any way of getting entry level jobs in payroll/accounts payable/receivable. Is there someplace I can volunteer where I can gain experience.
Kindly guide me
Thanks

Hello,
You're doing all the right things to prepare yourself for your new career. Having banking and insurance experience is often more valuable than book learning, so don't discount your experience verses the educational aspect of your knowledge. If I was an accounting manager, I'd hire you in a second. Also your work in childcare shows perseverance and patience, so don't leave that off your resume. Just between you and I, some of us employees can be very childish when we're unhappy with our pay scale. Rather indicate to a prospective enployer your ability to explain in simple terms and encourage people who have limited understanding of finances and remuneration. For those of us who've visited a company accounting department, we need to be able to talk to a person who's knowledgeable, yet able to put things in simple terms. Most of all, I want to wish you the very best in your job search. While things are a little slow right now, we'll all get through this and hopefully you'll be the accounting person we'll get to talk to.

Hi Anonymous! It sounds like you're on the right track, and already have a very compelling resume! Have you search payroll jobs on Fairygodboss?

I really think you could get an entry-level role with your experience alone, without needing to do unpaid work. You deserve compensation!

I definitely think you have experience as is! I would look for jobs as an accounting clerk and accounting assistant too...sometimes they appear under that. At my old company accounting clerks or assistants didn’t need degrees, just a will to work and learn. Sounds like you’d be a step up. Best of luck to you!

Thank you Kimberly. I have been applying through recruiting agency and directly to other companies but no luck. Anyway I am going to keep trying.

Hi again. I also would say if you are in a bigger geographic area, utilizing LinkedIn to seek out other additional recruiters may be helpful. I am in a senior accounting role now, but I connected with many recruiters during the time after my layoff due to Covid. They reach out for controller positions (above my reach as of now) and entry level positions that I think I’m beyond. I think maybe you can get additional traction there.
Also in these times there are more remote opportunities, so if you feel comfortable, you may be able to expand beyond your geographic area.
