How to beat Zoom burnout/Zoom fatigue

I've been working with clients virtually for five years. With the sudden world wide shift to working virtually, many people are suffering with Zoom burnout and Zoom fatigue. Here's a tip that can help everyone with losing focus, zoom burnout and zoom fatigue. When you are in speaker view, click on the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner of your picture. You'll see a drop down menu with the bottom option "Hide self view" - click on that and you will not see yourself anymore. Our entire lives, we have only seen the person or people that we are speaking with. Now we are asking our brains to work harder by trying to process this new neural pathway. Also, make conscious choices to keep coming back to the present by focusing on your breath. You can think "I'm breathing in, I'm breathing out..." I'd love to hear how these work for you. Good luck!

Thank you for this tip!! I realized I lose focus and worry about my own video very often on zoom calls. I am going to start hiding my self-view and see how this helps me adjust to the virtual work environment.

Woow, this is indeed an amazing tip! I did not know that function exists. And while doing any virtual meetings I feel too self-conscious and insecure if I am looking at myself, and I lose focus. So I will definitely try using this feature. Thank you very much!

I try to limit screen time as much as possible. I take breaks throughout the day to walk my dog, grab a snack, etc. Once I'm done working for the day, I try to focus on activities that don't involve a screen, and I've picked up a couple hobbies along the way!

Schedule time in your day to take a walk, call a friend, or read a cheezy magazine! Take your mind off of the online focus, and seeing yourself all day long!

Nice and simple yet effective tip for sure Stephanie! I often turn off my zoom self-view as well. Other tips I have found useful are to stand-up and move to get my blood flowing, so many of us are in back-to-back calls, hours can slip and we are still sitting/starring at the screen! And how does one remember? I do a few things #1) have water with me so I am staying hydrated, which will also nudge me naturally (wink - wink) to take a screen break and #2) set a timer on my phone or smart watch to buzz me when I have been sitting too long. This helps remind me to move my body AND gives my eyes a rest.... a win-win and my #3) Set 45min vs 60min meetings, if possible, to allow for a break between...you and your invitees will be grateful! Be well :)

Great tips Laura. I have (thankfully) only had 3 really tough days since the pandemic began and I realized that on those days my step count was way down. Gotta keep moving!

Great tip! I too have been working and coaching virtually for a long time and I love turning off my self-view! It makes it so much easier to focus on everyone else in the (zoom) room.

Yes, as someone said the other day, it makes it feel so much more personal.
