I am currently interviewing at a company, and have about 5 years of experience and a masters degree. So the way leveling works at the company is: Designer 1, Designer 2, Senior Designer 1, Senior Designer 2, Staff etc. The recruiter told me to apply to Designer 2 that has a broad experience level between 3-7 years. I'm on the higher side and would ideally like to get in at a higher level, so that I can grow faster.
I wanted to get the community's thoughts on :
1) How you would approach the conversation about levels, and ask to be considered for a Senior 1. Are experience bands flexible? How could I best display my competence to be considered for a higher level?
2) I've also heard the other side of the story- if you get in at a lower level and overperform, you likely will be seen in a better light than getting in at a higher level where expectations are more. While I understand this, I feel I will likely receive a promotion only after 12-18 months (I'm using an industry standard for a mid-sized company) I haven't been as lucky getting promoted internally in previous roles. Is this something to seriously consider as well?
Thank you all- this is a great community!
