Almost doesn't count...

So, I have been in transition for almost a year due to personal matters. Been searching for a fitting opportunity in EdTech for a while, now. Have had a few interviews, connections, etc. Just went through a 5 step interview process with a company, which I thought was going REALLY well, just to be informed (kindly) that they moved forward with another finalist. WHAT?!? This was almost 1 month's worth of interviewing, mentally prepping myself for video conferences, creating presentations out of thin air with 'made up data provided'...just to be told I didn't get the job....?!? I understand sometimes there just might be a better, more qualified person--there always is, but out of common courtesy, shouldn't they have let me know that I wasn't the only finalist? From their emails, this is exactly how it was stated, that I was the finalist and they're excited to move forward to the next steps with me. Then I get an email indicating, 'after careful consideration'...and you get the rest. Again, I get it, I respect their decision but I just feel like this was a huge blow to my confidence and a slap in the face. I guess I'm seeking advice on how to move forward after numerous attempts, sending in resumes, getting interviewed, then rejected (multiple times). I know these are unprecedented times, but it doesn't make the process any easier on landing an opportunity. I'm still looking, but I was just truly upset and disheartened. I'm discouraged and don't want to keep spiraling downwards because it's only going to prolong my journey. I'm open to any words of wisdom and encouragement. Thank you for reading this! :)

I used to get annoyed at the long process of some job interviews but now I view it as part of the process for some jobs (executive, a specialized or cross-disciplinary position or a job that is critical to the success of the company) About 5 years ago, I started to ask - at the beginning of the interview process - how many people will I be interviewing with, what the average length of time the hiring process takes, any special projects or testing required. I like to know ahead of time what I'm getting into so I feel like I'm part of the process not just along for the ride. We can only do our best during the interview process and sometimes another candidate will win out, that doesn't make us "less than".

Hi Nipa, I know this is going to sound corny, but do not give up! Many of my candidates have had similar experiences. Sometimes companies hired an internal candidate and needed an outside comparison, sometimes they hired someone who is less expensive, or move on with candidate who is more qualified. Now, competition for opportunities are at an all time high because of the mass influx of layoffs from major companies, like Macy's. All of the above are contributing factors to your interview process...and are completely out of your control. I know it's hard to not let it harm your confidence, but I think you should be encouraged that you keep getting interviews and have made final rounds. To me, that means you are getting close to a opportunity that may be more of a fit for you. That's what most of my candidates go through before they have a few offers before them!

Hi Deven, I appreciate your words of encouragement! :) I was super depressed for a while, but I feel I'm getting back to my perky self and not allowing these 'normal' rejections take control of me. I know I am worth it and any company is truly lucky to have me be onboard with them. Not to sound arrogant, but I just know my worth! :) Thanks again!

Hi Nipa, Sorry this happened to you. I can relate. Last year, I found an opportunity via networking and invested 3 months & 9 interviews to find out I was 2nd on the list and their 1st choice accepted the position. It stinks! Sometimes, you have to take a step back and realize things happen for a reason and there IS a better & more suited role out there for you. It might take time to find it (I'm still looking) but you have to believe in yourself and keep strong with your self-worth. Spend time on things that bring you confidence and build your motivation such as FGB webinars, friends, support groups,... You have to believe the right job will come along (I highly recommend networking) so when you have those interviews you're still presenting yourself in the best light possible. Good luck to you!!
