How To Inform Boss Of Pregnancy When You Are One Person Department

I have read several articles on how to inform your boss of your pregnancy but I’m not finding anything on how to approach it and set up a plan when you are a one person HR Dept. How do you plan for temporary coverage for a dept. of one?

Wait until you show usually around the fifth month before you announce. Say you will help find andvyrain a temporary replacement.

I've been here; let them know when you're ready to share. Take time to cross-train someone if you can & have written instructions & put together a schedule of what needs to be done while you're out - weekly tasks, one time things; these are good to have for business continuity purposes as well. Provide written notice of how long you intend to be out. And as HR, make sure you know what policies/laws need to be followed while you're out. And then enjoy your time with baby!

First, Congratulations! How exciting!!! Unless you own the business, it really isn't your responsibility to think about how the positing can be covered during your leave. Your employer should have a process for that, whether it's filling it with a temp. or other employees absorbing the responsibilities. I'd tell my boss that I am excited about my family growing and would be glad to help with a transition plan before my leave begins. My boss should be happy for me, and if he/she isn't, I would think hard about the culture of that workplace. Best wishes to you!

I would wait until the your second trimester. There's plenty of time. They'll need to hire someone or crosstrain another person to cover for you. A LOT of women have the best intentions of working from home and juggling a baby, but please remember that this is MEDICAL leave. It isn't truly maternity leave like other countries. You only get the required time your body needs to heal. You will be beyond exhausted and if you go back too early, you put all your STD wages in jeopardy of having to start over.

Is there the ability to hire a temp in the months before you leave and train them for what to do while you're gone?
