Advice for a new boss?

In a few short weeks I will begin a new job with an International school as the Head of my department. I have nine years of teaching experience but have never led a group of my colleagues before. I'm just looking for any advice you might have for me as I go into the new role.

Agree with all the comments above. When I start a new management role, I like to observe and listen to understand the team and the dynamics. One-on-ones are vital to getting to know your team and learning what their successes and challenges are. You have great experience which will help with decision making, just be transparent.

I agree with everything above. In my experience I recommend being seen as an advocate for the members of your team, being transparent about decisions, having empathy, and holding individuals accountable when expectations are not met. Good luck!!

All of the above and my 2 cents: Don't lose sight of your direct experience as a teacher with students, in both how you look at issues that may arise. Whether it be teacher/administrative/student based, remembering how decisions impact everyone is important (especially since, depending on your position specifics, some decision could potentially not impact you as leadership). Not reacting instantly to non emergency issues is key so that you have the space and time to listen, consider, and then really form how you want to act and respond. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Actively listen. Take good notes. Be highly aware of the team dynamics and engagement. Also, be confident that you will do a great job. Lastly, look for a mentor to help you work through challenges and strategies for success.

Both Debi and Brooke provided excellent advice. In addition, make sure you establish a pattern of one-on-one meetings with your direct reports. These will be meetings in which they will propose the items to be discussed and you will listen and provide feedback. These should be 30min or less meetings, every 3-4 weeks. During these meetings, make sure you ask them how you can support them to achieve their goals. Since your direct reports are former colleagues, these official will help re-affirm your new role.

As Debi said, REALLY listen to what your team members have to say. I would also suggest setting clear expectations with your staff in a positive way. Set meetings with each of them privately, if possible, so that you can get to know them. Let them know what you expect of them, and ask what they expect from you. Try your best to be a resource to them to help them be successful.

Always listen first. Get an idea of the dynamics. Maintain confidentiality at all times as well as professionalism. Bosses aren't best friends. You usually never know why the person who had that job before you ended up leaving.
