This is a very common practice, unfortunately. I actually wrote a WSJ piece about working for two bosses with tips that you may find helpful: https://www.wsj.com/articles/for-more-workers-having-many-bosses-is-the-new-normal-11596110400

Same issue I have at work, my boss is easy going and trusting that I’ll do the job I need to do. My manager on the other hand is an overbearing micromanager that drives me crazy because she finds a problem with everything I do. Even when I do something extra that’s not my job but just want to help out she tells me not to do that. I keep a book and date it for all the ridiculous things she tells me not to do, some are valid but most things are ridiculous.

I have sometimes done work for multiple team leads. It can be…confusing.
Boss #1 is probably where you’d want to be investing your time, even if you receive little feedback or praise. They either trust you or the know the business well enough to know that your work is perfectly good enough and then they move on to things that require more troubleshooting.
Boss #2 is likely insecure in their role and stressed out. Sometimes it can’t be helped, and you’ve got to make it work. Calling them out on the unclear instructions might set off the insecurities. So *try* to suss out if there’s any rhyme or reason to their corrections, or if they’re just painfully figuring out what they want through you.
Someone who can’t verbalize their expectations may be hoping that “they’ll know it when they see it” and it stinks. Can you ask for an example of what they think is a great template? (Do they even know?)
Also, take the life lesson from this: It’s easier to thrive with good structure. There’s a fair amount of subjective opinions in management; don’t take 1 opinion as the entire picture. And try to identify what attributes and patterns work best for you.
