Difficult team lead

My team lead is one of the most toxic people I have encountered. She loses no opportunity to throw people under the bus (including her own teammates) in order to make herself looks good. Recently, she has been doing this a lot to me, via email, looping in our head of the department. These are tiny, minuscule things which can be rectified if she just picks up the phone and call me. She tends to blow things out of proportion and it is getting very difficult to work with her. The thing is that our department head now has a very bad opinion of me. I wake up every day anxious and dreading what she will be up to today. Confrontations with her do not go well because she turns it around and makes herself the victim, and digressing from the matter at hand. She constantly gaslights me. I cannot leave this job now because of the current job environment and that I am only eight months in to this job. What do I do?

I am so sorry to hear you are going through this! It is such a toxic environment and I can understand how you would not want to leave the company being only 8 months in however I really only have 2 pieces of advice. 1. Start looking into other roles within the company, maybe another team or even a lateral move or 2. Start looking outside of the company for a new role. Just because you've been there a shorter while than most, it does not make a toxic work environment okay, it does NOT mean you should subject yourself to anxiety and stress. I wish you the best of luck and if I can do anything to help, PLEASE let me know!

Please apply for a new job. This is exactly what happened to me and I ended up suffering from severe anxiety and depression from the job. It resulted in me also having to take short term disability as I had panic attacks at the thought of work. I thought I could overcome the environment but it has resulted in severe health issues. Make yourself a priority and start applying somewhere else. That toxic culture isn’t changing.
