I'm wondering how to use my experience with real estate development and finance to help progressive political activities.

There are a number of great orgs that could use board members with finance experience. Check out Emerge, which has chapters in most states. They recruit, train and provide a support network for Democratic women who want to run for political office. https://emergeamerica.org/

I don’t know much about real estate, but like many today, I am concerned about the moratorium that will end and allow tenants to be evicted. There are many causes that housing advocates can get involved in. The current administration repealed the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing rule to save the suburbs from low-income housing. But no matter the ecosocial background, we all need affordable housing. Housing advocates can work with the current administration to identify discriminatory housing practices in their communities and devise a plan to combat them. This is just one way to advance a progressive society that includes everyone.

Hi Cynthia, Your skills are absolutely applicable. Along with Emerge, here are some other organizations to consider looking into: Vote Run Lead, Rep19, New Leaders Council, She Should Run. Rooting for you!

Are you involved in your local political party (I'm guessing Democratic)? There are a number of needs that go unfilled in every election cycle and the best way to get started is to engage with your state Legislative District organization. From there, you can get involved in local, state, and federal elections, meet a lot of great people, get some solid on-the-ground experience that could eventually get you hired by those you help get elected, or appointed to some really great boards and / or commissions. But first, you have to do the grunt work. Get involved.

You would be welcome as a board member at many nonprofits, I'm sure. I would contact the organizations you're interested in and talk with them about your experience. Ask them how you can help. There is no blanket answer to your question, but it will depend on the organization. Like a for-profit, you need to show them your skills and show them your desire to help and how you think your skills might be applicable to their mission.
