Question about negotiating salary:
I was approached by a recruiter for a job that sounds perfect for me, but pays about 10% less than what I currently make.
The recruiter was very clear about the salary from the start, but I decided to interview for the job anyway because it sounds really great and I was wanting to leave my current job anyway. I was very transparent with the recruiter and with the company’s internal HR when I interviewed about my current compensation, and told them I’m ok interviewing for the role knowing that the salary range is less than what I make now but that I’d obviously like to get to as close as my current rate as possible.
Today I heard back that I’ll be getting a formal offer soon. To be clear, I’m willing to take the pay cut if I have to - but at the same time, I want to negotiate for as close to my current salary as possible, which is the market rate for my experience and responsibilities. When I get the offer, how do I/ can I negotiate for more, given that they told me their salary range up front?
