Being a successful manager is about knowing that being the manager is not about being the boss. You’re job is to cultivate your team and also cultivate your abilities. Now, I know you are designated the manager but I prefer to look at it as - you’re the connecting point. A lot of people work together but do not know how to work with each other. You’re the driving force. So getting to know your team as the other comments suggest is great but also getting to know who you are and what you like is important too. Finally, define success. Success for many people is financial or about ego other times, people do not know what success looks like for their company. So make sure you know what it is and that you can articulate it because in so many cases, people dont know what it is and aren’t managing / leading because of it.

Be in tune with not only the business, but your team. Stay hungry learning and leveraging your talent and skills (read books, articles, online courses). Introspection is huge. Be honest with yourself when it comes to your strengths and weaknesses and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Humility goes a long way. You’re better than you think!

There are a million strategies you can employ, but in reality they all boil down to something really simple: To be a successful manager, you need to do everything you can to ensure the success of the team you are managing. What that means is different for every team, and actually different for every individual on the team. To understand what your team needs to be successful, it can be as simple as asking them questions like: - What is keeping you from achieving your goals? (ie. what environmental factors are at play here - are there roadblocks that you as a manager can remove? Do they need tools or training?) - What was the most difficult part of that last project you completed? - What are your favorite/least favorite parts of your role? (ask this because employees will be much more effective if you can shape the role around their passions to the greatest extent possible)
