Because I talk a lot about career and the importance of finding your purpose, sometimes I get this question:
Do your career and purpose have to coincide?
The answer is NO! Your purpose can have nothing to do with what you do for a living. Finding purpose, meaning, and fulfillment in other areas of your life is critical.
But my take is you spend so much time at work. You spend some much energy thinking about work. Why not try to integrate the two as much as possible?
It won’t always be a perfect fit, but I bet you can get closer than where you are right now.

Yesterday I was supposed to have my 1:1 with my boss directly after our team call to talk with him about my Q4 goals.
He asked the rest of the team to stay and hear what I had put together. When I told him what I had planned he said that I wasn't proactive or strategic and hadn't done certain things. I spoke calmly back and said it wasn't true and that I had done these things he mentioned and it hadn't really worked well and then I mentioned what was working. It didn't go well and I feel angry and demoralized as I have had a lot of success in my role but he keeps making terrible comments like this in meetings. I have a lot of experience in my field and I'm trying to share my expertise but he doesn't want to listen to it and thinks he knows everything. I'm hoping for some advice on how to handle someone like him.

Were my annual reviews too long winded and how do I get my underpaid direct reports larger than average salary increases?
Hi, I have two direct reports at a job I started at the beginning of the year. One is a more seasoned employee who has been doing the work of two employees imo for over a year and the other is a recent collect grad. We recently had our annual written reviews and I wrote about four or five paragraphs on their strengths and accomplishments, trying to point out specific things I thought were above average in terms of contributions. I also mentioned that I hoped that their contributions were acknowledged in terms of more competetive pay.
Now I'm worried that the reviews I left them might have been too long winded for HR/Senior Management to read through.
I also feel like both of them aren't even being paid a competetive wage. What else can I do to try and get them increases? I have spoken with my own manager who agrees with me, but he also said his manager is focused on the budget. Any ideas how I can convince the people who have the power to sign off on increases to increase their pay my more than the standard COL increase?
