Aly, Thank you for posting this. I have worked with a number of coaches over the years both as colleagues and as coaches. I have been lucky to work with many who like you do tell your clients this. Many people are looking for a quick fix to keep moving forward. In our society of quick fixes, we often miss the journey and experiences that we can have, learn from, and enjoy along the way. Thank you for your work and clarity. Take care, Lisa

For sure, Lisa! Everyone just wants to get the answer and be done, I know I was guilty of that a few times in my early 20s especially. Just thinking: I wish someone would have just handed me the answers to what my life is going to look like and then I'll just relax and make it happen. But I'm learning to appreciate the journey and the learning experiences along the way so much more!

Great perspective, Aly! As with so many things in adult life, managing a career is something you have to do yourself -- but not BY yourself. A career coach has lots of value to add, first as a great listener: when you hear yourself describe the situation you're in and where you'd like to be, you'll learn something; when you hear how that description sounds to a neutral third-party, you'll learn some additional things. Then those tools come into play and, since I'm not a career coach myself, I'll leave that to someone else to describe. They are valuable, and in the right hands invaluable, to help you understand why you may be stuck and how you may get unstuck. Yet the tools themselves won't get you unstuck, you will. Any career calls on us to draw on our strengths and address our weaknesses, and a career challenge (positive or negative) just puts a greater focus on that. Some of what holds any one of us back may be experiences outside the workplace; don't hesitate to find mental health support as well as career coaching if you can see why you're stuck but can't get past it. Of course, psychologists, social workers and the like can't do the work for you, either, but they can be an important part of your team.

This is a great perspective. So often with my clients, I've found that saying yes to coaching is saying yes to themselves and they start hiring support teams around them. I help with career coaching but then they'll hire personal trainers because they're now finding motivation again to get back in shape and they'll hire therapists (and I encourage them to do that!) because they're uncovering other things they want to work with. It's been a fascinating pattern to watch unfold but I'm always so proud of the clients who do it, they have amazing results in their lives.

This is a tough one Aly! With so many different types of coaches out there it can be challenging for the young professional to identify the appropriate fit for their desired goals. The reality points you've laid out are hopefully what coaches who are dedicated to making an true impact for their clients lead with... I know it's what I lead with and have experienced great feedback for my honesty ?

Yes! I swear I stumble upon a new type of coach every day. There are coaches for everything and I had no idea before I stepped into the coaching space. I like to think that most of them have good intentions and want to create true impact for their clients. I believe it's important to remember though, they're human too! They have blindspots and they have their own stuff to be working through as well. I love that you lead with that as well!

In my experience with coaching, I've also found that I already have all the answers inside of me; my coach asks questions that help me bring my decisions to the surface. I've also read research that proves that when the person being coached arrives at the answer on their own vs. being given advice, it tends to stick more and they're more motivated to follow through because they personally drew the conclusion. But you probably already know as that as a coach!

If your coach is telling you what to do all the time they aren't empowering you to own your path!

This is exactly right - it's not much of a variation from traditional counseling. It's really about helping a person discover what they already know but don't have always have the confidence to speak to or can't articulate. I find much of the role of a coach is to help develop confidence and perspective so you can take ownership of your feelings, strengths, and fears.

Absolutely! I can help you uncover them but I agree completely, you'll have more buy in and motivation if you can unearth the answers with my guidance instead of me flat out telling you!
