I found this article really insightful. A few key takeaways are be direct and straight to the point, ask if they have time to chat offline, and take the leap!

Thanks for sharing. I've been networking all throughout this year and it's been a wonderful experience. Many people are able and willing to help. And if they can't help, either they won't respond or they'll be honest. It never hurts to try.
As an example, I sent a cold email over the summer to someone whose work I've been admiring for years. We've since had a terrific video chat and he's introduced me to others in his team. Everyone has been so lovely and helpful.
I agree with the writer of the article that being clear about your reasons for connecting are critical to the success of your outreach. Good luck to all those who are seeking advice and help.

Yes, thank you for sharing. I have worked remotely for over a decade, and I have found the pandemic has helped me network more because now everyone is mostly at home. I have connected with people on LinkedIn and joined Zoom calls with people I've never met to chat about almost any topic. Many people are open to networking. Also, joining virtual events in your field is a great way to meet new people and discuss ideas - sometimes there are a few people in those that you meet and really develop relationships with.

I second the virtual events. I've been able to attend events that I have always wanted to but never had the time to. They were often at a location that was difficult to get to, given the drive time and time of day, i.e., learning over lunch or coffee and donuts. Now that they are virtual events, I've been able to pop on and meet many wonderful people. Another, slightly less obvious option is to join groups that are outside your geographical area. I've been in meetings with people from Austria, India, and all over the US. It's been great to get a broader perspective.
