Last week someone who I actually get along with pretty good asked me if I was from either the Comanche or Cherokee Nations which kinda threw me back. My answer was in truth that my family came from Eastern Europe in 1931, 3rd generation American.. He seemed surprised to hear that. My job application would have stated if I was Native American proudly and rightfully. Plus, I would have shared at work on my own free will. My dark olive skin tone and dark eyes can be misleading to some. I rarely share my family history because it’s unusual and my nationality.
Chatter behind my back at work because they know what I’m not. Decided not to file any complaints with the EEOC or go to HR which would be useless. Sharing my experience because I feel that I can learn from it. My ethnicity is Armenian Gypsy who my ancestors settled outside of Budapest. My family left the clan to escape the Holocaust. Still have distant relatives there.
Please be considerate when asking colleagues about their background and history. If they offer, it’s one thing. If not, ask permission if they want to share their story. Thanks.
