Following the loss of our fearless Ruth, I’ve been reflecting on wise advice I once received. ‘People often overestimate what they can achieve in one year and underestimate what they can achieve in five. Progress takes time.’
Five years ago, September 2015, I was unemployed and making my second career switch (returning to my original field). I was frustrated that my job search was taking so much longer than I had anticipated while all of my friend’s careers were quickly accelerating. I was also frustrated by my finances which had taken a major blow in my pursuit of passion.
Today my reality looks extremely different and I’ve surpassed most of my friends professionally. While I didn’t expect my job search in 2015 to last ten months, I also never dreamt that five short years later I would be earning 4x more and working for such prestigious institutions. I never dreamt that I would reach my current net worth and my life would completely change.
Progress takes time. 2020 has been a very difficult year with a lot of challenges. But challenges are temporary, they pass in time, and circumstances improve. Don’t get discouraged by where you are in the short term, the next five years could blow your mind if you keep at it. I’m rooting for you and I believe in you!
