I work for a private school and am still in my 90 day probation period.
When I was offered the job, I signed a letter of acceptance that I would be paid as a salaried employee. After Christmas break, I was told I had been switched to hourly, and would not be working when students were on break which cuts my pay by 8000 a year. I called HR and was told I’m in an “at will” state and I always have the choice to leave the job, the school feels it’s best for business. Any thoughts? I feel like they just showed me how much they value me and am a bit offended. Any thoughts?

Private School- I hope you have a plan from your supervisor on how the preparations for the new school year will take place with out individuals working. Higher Education did receive additional stimulus money so there is a chance your situation could change quickly. Please make sure you have filed for unemployment and if possible ask if the school will provide your health care during this interim. Honestly, I would use the time to prep my resume and cover letter for spring hiring blitz.

As long as they told you BEFORE the effective date of your pay change, I do not believe there's anything illegal here. But it is disheartening, so if you feel that they just don't value your contributions (as opposed to being in financial dire straits themselves), then start applying elsewhere.

Private schools are the worst. They take government money with no strings attached.
