Quitting via Zoom

I'm so excited to share that I'm accepting an offer for a new job this week. It has been a long time coming so I'm grateful especially with so much unknown with my current job. If I were in person at the office, I'd typically ask my manager to chat quickly privately. Given Zoom and sometimes it being difficult to call unexpectedly, has anyone quit via Zoom during the pandemic? Curious how you approached it, if differently at all, or just pinged your manager and asked to chat without stating exactly what it is. I know there's no perfect way to do this but would love your thoughts!

I had an employee resign a few weeks ago, he shot me a text asking to chat when I had a free moment. I was thrilled for him and it was easier to do over the phone than via zoom, I feel like looking at another person when it's just the two of you on zoom is weird.

Having worked in many fully-remote companies over the years, I have quit via phone or video calls a few times. If you normally communicate to your manager (in the pandemic) via Zoom, then set up a Zoom call. If you are more comfortable, then do it over a phone call.

Zoom is essentially the same as in person these days so just go for it, adhering to the points listed above. You can't control the in-person aspect so no sense worrying about it. Congrats on the new role!

I have experience on both sides of this situation, and I can tell you with confidence that as long as you follow the same rules during your Zoom call as you would in person, then the Zoom is perfect. Make sure no one else in either physical room or on the Zoom call. Make sure you both have video enabled. Sit the same distance from the camera as you would in real life. As long as the call is private between you and your manager, and you are using the video with camera on, then it is exactly the same as a face-to-face conversation. They can see your expressions and body language and you have given them your full attention in the best way possible.

Pick up the phone and have a voice-to-voice conversation and then send on your resignation. No one wants to be fired during a Zoom call because of the impersonal nature of it and the reverse is at least almost as true. Sometimes a regular old phone call is still best.

No personal experience. My thought is to ask for a meeting with your manager to discuss "something". When you set the zoom meeting, handle it as you would in person, and follow up with letter of resignation. Or only telephone with resig letter follow up.

Yes, I love the idea of saying you need to discuss "something." Years ago, someone on my team was quitting remotely and because it was completely unexpected, and I would have appreciated the heads up. I would be able to read between the lines of discussing "something," and know that a resignation might be coming.
