I'm in the final stages of possibly landing a job at a phenomenal company out of state, in an area I'd love to move to. My SO and I would rent out there but we need to sell our house first. His job is flexible so no issue there and we don't have kids. Luckily we live in a desirable area where the houses…

Since then, I’ve been actively applying for jobs but rarely hear back. When asked why I’m looking for a new job in interviews, I haven’t always been sincere, giving different reasons. Recently, I decided to be upfront and told an interviewer that I was made redundant. But their response thre…

Did they give you a job description? Beware of the title Office Administrator because it’s usually a catch all position. I’m curious why you didn’t take the position in the high school because that’s usually a civil service position with great benefits and retirement. Knowing what you know now about the job you accepted, would you have a change of heart about the high school position? If so, I’d call them
back to see if they filled it yet. If not, I’d keep looking for another position, while you learn the ins and outs of this one. Sometimes things are very different from what we perceive them to be because we’re not privy to the inner workings of the company or the specific responsibilities of others. That being said, I only had that experience once and I knew by the first week that this position was not going to be the position I accepted. In my case my supervisor was not going to allow me to do my job and micromanaged my entire day. It wasn’t until the Vice-President called me in to inquire why I wasn’t producing in this role. She saw there was a gigantic mismatch between my resume, interview and my performance. I let her know what was happening and she immediately called in my supervisor. The only thing that changed after that was he managed to alienate 85% of my coworkers against me. I cried everyday before going to work. Then one day I was assaulted by the office bully. I went to HR and they were all out to lunch. So , I went home and never returned. Good luck in moving forward whatever that looks like for you.

Trust your gut. I have worked for 3 places in my career that I knew within 2 weeks were so wrong on so many levels for me. Job was misrepresented, teams were gossipy and unsupportive, I could see I was actually going to be taking on 4 different roles or all of the above. Keep working, keep looking for a new job and try to enjoy the fact that you landed in a super tough market.
