I'm sorry this is happening. Sounds like you've got a lot on your plate. IF I'm reading this correctly (and please forgive me if I'm not) it sounds as if you recently joined the team or at least are the newest member (Comment: "they are not used to someone coming in and standing up for themselves") To be clear here: I'm not condoning bullying. That has no place anywhere. Yet could it have been the team was intimidated or fearful of you as the newest member, possibly someone who was smarter and could do a better job? Maybe that person was a special hire by the boss? Hindsight is 20/20 and maybe you did this (I don't know); allowing the boss to correct the situation first is always a good idea. If he/she doesn't, then say, Thanks for trying. Given company protocol for bullying, I'm going to have to take the next step which is going to HR (the hotline, whatever).
Also - Given my assumption that you were the new person: Many people don't like change, plus fear and jealousy often mask themselves as bullies. Here comes the new person, perhaps with a lot more experience or maybe the team was perfectly happy as their own little high school "clique" and saw you as an outsider they didn't want to play with. I've been the new kid on the block and it's not fun. Team mates would not even tell me where the bathroom was; wouldn't share details about the project I was supposed to be working on; they would go out of their way to be rude - yet in front of our VP it was all sugar-coated niceness while throwing me under the bus I never saw coming. Months later I found out they thought I was hired to replace them.
Bottom line: going back to HR will not, IMO, solve much. If this is not a good environment, I would keep my head down and do a great job to keep earning a check while looking for my next opportunity on the side. While playing very nice in the sandbox - these people won't know how to react when you are beyond nice and helpful. And when you leave you'll do so on a high note.
