Remote Learning and Remote Working

What stance, if any, has your employer taken on their expectations for when remote learning starts? Are they requiring you to come to the office? Are they allowing you to working from home and support your children's learning as needed?

When employees feel supported, they can do anything. They will work harder and better when you give them what they need to success personally and professionally.

We are work from home and virtual learning for the foreseeable future. We don't start school until September 1st so I am still in this weird space of not knowing what the balance will need to be. I've been pretty honest with my manager and since I work in HR the conversation is sort of a constant for how employees can balance the work. We are a for profit sales company and a lot of our employees have to be in a store to sell so we cannot have a blanket policy so really our company is encouraging flexibility and conversations with employees to make sure they have the support they need. We will see when we go back to school what sort of insanity unfolds...

We have already started our school year. The first couple of weeks have been pretty crazy, but we are all still here and working through tech issues together. The requirements for distance learning under SB98 call for live daily interactions with the teacher and classmates. I would encourage parents to just be open and honest with their students' teachers about their abilities to participate in distance learning. As teachers, we are still figuring out how this model will work most effectively and as long as we are all learning together, there is room for understanding and honest communication. We are dealing with the difficulties of closing an achievement gap while delivering grade level instruction through a computer screen. This is all new and we can figure out the appropriate parameters together. As long as you are meeting your state's requirements and communicating with the teacher regularly, you should have the resources and supports you need to get through this! Best of luck!

I actually just created a pandemic specific dependent care clause for our work from home policy. We're allowing parents to work from home (encouraging work from home anyway) and let our team know that they need to continue to meet job expectations. However, we have asked that everyone be willing to flex meetings to meet the needs of those with extra caregiving needs now.

I work for a higher ed institution and anyone who *can* work from home is encouraged to do so. Many professors are working from home to reduce population density for researchers to continue their work. All of us are being encouraged to be there to support our kids' learning, but that could just be because we're in education.

I work for an international company but the corporate office is having local leadership make the decision about returning to the office. At this point the stance is still if you can work from home then do. They are actively discussing that we will be back in the office at some point but there are several milestones that have to be reached before that applies to the bulk of the office on a daily basis. They are also very up front that if you don't have child care then you don't have to be in the office.

We're still working from home, and that flexibility is encouraged for those who need it, but it hasn't otherwise been discussed how to manage calls and classes that occur at the same time.
